What I have yet to learn about teamwork (#kcsw)
I find myself blogging about Startup Weekend…again. This time it’s Kansas City Startup Weekend, which by all accounts looks to be a fantastic event, much like any other Startup Weekend I’ve attended to date.
What does not cease to amaze me is the difficulty of getting over the initial hump of forming a cohesive team in such a short period of time. I now firmly believe that’s where Start ups from any weekend will either succeed or fail.
Coming out of Triangle Startup Weekend in Raleigh, I was feeling like a rock star – like I had been instrumental in creating something great, fun and potentially profitable. True enough by some accounts. I decided to challenge myself (and have others challenge me as well) to try and recreate the team-building environment by which Triangle Startup Weekend was such a great environment for the Pivot start up.
The first evening of ideation and choosing teams didn’t work out exactly the way I had envisioned. Not bad, just unexpected were the ideas chosen. I struggled to find a diverse group of people that had coalesced around an innovative concept. (Too many, or too few developers in one group, not enough biz dev or design in another).
The end result thus far has been a rogue group of visitors to Kansas City working on a concept that wasn’t even pitched at the onset of the event. In this group I find myself challenged to bring together everyone’s specialties together for the good of the project, and am truly excited at what it might turn into. In the end, I’ve got lots more to learn to become the team building guru that I want to be. I’ll let you know how it goes.
